What's confusing to me is the girl would come towards him when he asks about her... yet shuts her down.

She gets made fun of. Yet, she understand and has seen this guy literally stalk her every move.

They both were scared.

But is it really an ego boost to him? Why spend 7 years not being able to talk to a really pretty girl in person but play these childish games online?

Your wording makes this a confusing read. If there is no actual relationship then he is not leading her on. If he is stalking her then he is stalking her. She should divert her energy to other places and ignore this guy, especially after such a long period of time.
