We broke up 12 months ago but have stayed in touch. We're both single. He told me he wants to be single, but have invited himself over to my place twice in a week, helped me out with this and that, offered help in the future as well, in fact urged me to call if in need of anything. He hugged me repeatedly and kissed the top of my head.

I would give it some more time if I were in your position. Sounds like he is giving you mixed signals. And mixed signals usually = no. Exes can still have *some* feelings for each other (kissing your head etc) without necessarily wanting you back. Live your life and if he doesn't come back with a definitive statement of wanting you back, just do your own thing. Who broke up with who?
