Confused, does he like me or is this just friendship?

I’ve liked this guy for about a year and we’ve become friends. I want to tell him, but I’m scared of losing our friendship. So I need to know if I’m reading too much into things or if he likes me.

Some signs:
He makes excuses to talk to me
I’ve caught him looking at me and looking away
He asked me for my number and sometimes texts first
He’s open with me and tries to make me laugh

Things that make me doubt:
He talks and laughs with other girls (not a player, they’re girls that he’s known longer than me)
Sometimes he sees me but I have to approach him first

Edit: He also has initiated some one on one hangouts between us and we banter and joke around a lot

It goes without saying, but no one except him can tell you with 100% certainty whether he likes you or not. We can make speculate, maybe build your confidence up with yes’s, but none of it is fact. From my perspective, everything you listed can be interpreted as friendly or flirty. Making excuses to talk, looking at you and so on are things I’ve done at work and at school with friends to pass the time. But it could easily be tactics to flirt if that’s what I wanted. My point here is that it’s a gamble for you no matter what. What you have to decide is which is really more important — losing the potential to date him or messing up your friendship. You like him a lot because you’ve fixated on that feeling for the past year but it’s nothing you can’t move past if you decided to stay friends. However if you told him and he didn’t feel the same, yes it would hurt and maybe it would screw with the friendship but at least you can move on knowing you tried. It’s a big choice no matter what, so make it well.
