Does he like me more than just a friend?

I have been friends with him for a long time. We usually made fun of each other when our friends are around but we are caring for each other in private. I have started liking him since last summer. He would tell me to hang out with him almost everyday and we would talk about our favourite music, his favourite games, we would listen to music together and just talk. It was very meaningful to me. We have similar humour. We had stopped talking after a few months bc he had his exams but he told me nothing about it and talked to everyone else. I got sad and told myself to get over him but then we started talking again and i felt more comfortable with him. I was worried there was no emotional connection between us but he started opening up to me about his problems and how he was facing many difficulties. I was there for him non stop. He had his exams again but i was trying to check up on him everyday. Now, his exams have stopped and we started talking regularly again. Though he seems to avoid me and never closes the conversation saying good bye or good night. We talk about our cats, our favourite music artists, we share our interests in art and games. Recently he told me he uses one of my "words" when i refer to cats and i got butterflies. Is there a possibility he likes me? My friends told me i should make the first move. I am all about letting yourself out of the shell and being open about what you feel but i am scared of him pushing me away. I really want to confess to him i am just not sure if i really should. Can i have your opinion on this situation?
