There is many reasons that come to mind, what is missing is context. In my case in a situation like school, room mates or work, I would always prefer the situation to remain cordial to prevent awkwardness. Other reasons which are speculation is he wants to possible be sexual with you at a later time or has anxiety issues which can be reduced knowing the situation is in fact ok. Proceed with caution.
