If they're serious about the friendship, then they won't let themself get to that point. I have many female friends, and in the few cases where I thought something more might develop from the friendship, I've had a conversation with the friend about it before letting myself feel on it and get attached to the idea. If she feels like something more could develop, then we explore that together, while also focusing on maintaining or friendship, and it she doesn't then I can cut off that vein of thought and focus on our friendship without training it with the desire for more.
