It sucks and is real uncool to do. Can't change it but it happens unfortunately. I was catfished once and it messes with you but it gets better.

Have a process in place so that don’t happen. Like for example, after talking online you should both transition to FaceTime or video camera talking to each other live

You can avoid it by being very selective over who you talk to. I delete at least 50% of the messages that come my way on here.
