It felt like there was meaning behind what he said and a certain look in his eyes. But then he isn’t messaging daily, he is meeting with me in groups, and I’m confused. I also caught him staring at my friend while I was having a conversation with him at her birthday. I have a better intellectual connection with him and they wouldn’t be compatible. But he’s confusing me. We have the most interesting conversations that he could never have with her but why tell me I was important?

Okay, you don't know what the connection is between him and that other girl. For to assume it's 'better', more intellectual, or whatever is just pure speculation on your part. You obviously feel threatened by her for some reason.
He didn't tell you you were important. He just looked at you after he said something.
