How do guys feel getting compared to other guys?

Men are compared to other men all the time, every day, and we're pretty aware of what our standing is. We know where we stand financially, socially, career-wise, with our fitness, and with women (our ability to get a girl/get laid). Nothing there is going to be news to us, and it won't bother us.

But we do NOT want to be compared in the bedroom, anymore than women do. Most men can handle being told that they need to improve this or that in the bedroom, but a woman should NEVER say "my last boyfriend was so much better at..." or anything similar, because that's going to be a nuclear bomb to the relationship. It would be like a guy telling a woman "your mom/sister is much better at..." in the bedroom - it's not going to end well. Likewise, if you tell your boyfriend about your past guy's bigger dick, you're probably going to be single shortly afterwards. No guy wants to hear that.

Ok, well I'm not really talking about a sexual aspect

In that case, it's not likely to be a problem. Guys expect to have to compete with one another.

The main thing you should avoid are criticisms of things they have no control over and can't change, such as height.

Why? How about job/education criticism or looks

Well, I know those things really matter to this guy I know. So that's why I'm asking

And I think in general he just has low self esteem

Most guys have no problem with that, especially if it's constructive criticism. Obviously if you're just being mean and belittling him, well, no one is going to like that.

He deserves to be belittled though & for me to be mean

Then why even bother to ask this question?

It's great if it's a compliment and sucks when it's a criticism. Nobody likes being put down.
