Is it rude that my boyfriend said this to me?

My boyfriend looked at me & said “look you have a 6 pack” then proceeded to say “just kidding the only 6 pack you have is a 6 pack of beers” honestly he knows that I’ve been through an eating disorder, and I have severe body image issues… I’m 18 years old, 5’8 & 128 pounds. No way am I near overweight and he basically just called me fat. I’m not talking to him for the rest of the night.

I think it's possible that he was maybe a bit ignorant and maybe genuinely meant it as a joke, thinking or hoping that you two have an unspoken understanding where rude jokes like that are acceptable for him or both of you to say to each other.

That said, I think it's also very possible that on some level he wanted to lash out at you, whether he's aware of it or not, and rationalized it in his head with "it's just a joke" even though it was at your expense.

On a side note, and I hope you don't mind me saying this but, I don't think you should ignore him or stop talking to him. I don't think that's practical. I think it's unproductive, or at the very least not the best solution. Communication is key, and punishing each other is just destructive. For both of you.

Yeah it's insensitive. He shouldn't joke about your weight especially since you're perfectly fit, not even a little overweight. Some people just don't think before they speak.

My ex boyfriend told me I had really packed on the beef before he left me. So I was upset and crying and I looked at myself in the mirror and at old pictures and I really had. He was right to leave me. After when I tried to date again I couldn't get any good men but a year later after taking action and losing weight had no problem. I will never get that fat again
