Why doesn’t he just tell me how he feels?

I’ve known this guy for about 10 years (we met in high school we’re both 26 and 27 now) Looking back at our messages there was always some flirting and we never really connected emotionally just physically. When we were 20 and 21 we had sex and after that we kinda established that that’s really what we are. Anyways we stopped talking and had relationships and we recently reconnected after 5 years and we just casually talk with the occasional sex. Up until a few days ago he was talking to me about his past relationships and how he might have commitment issues. But he has alluded that he wants to have a family within 5 years. It just took me by surprise that we had a “deep” convo. because it was always very surface level. I always wondered if he ever thought about me as anything other than just the girl he sleeps with. I’m just curious if guys ever think about that or if anyone has had a similar experience. It’s interesting to me that’s all. I’ve wanted to ask him but i think he feels as if he spoke too much about his past and his needs that maybe he might think that I want him as a boyfriend. Although it would be cool, I also would never approach him with that just out of fear that I might ruin whatever we got going on.
