I'm asking about men specifically in this instance because I'm curious what they think and what women think about their break ups with guys.

I doubt that anyone has a completely objective viewpoint into why their own relationship ended, male or female.
It's both human nature to see yourself in a slightly better light, given the circumstances, as well as a coping mechanism. If you're already processing the end of a relationship, you're probably not likely, at least at first, to be all that critical of yourself.
It's probable that most people will do that as a way to salve their emotional pain. "It's not my fault, so if I blame them for everything, I'll be able to move on, and begin healing."
I think it's somewhat natural for the majority of both men & women to do so, when it's still fresh, because the people that don't are the ones that break down, and pile ALL of the blame on themselves, which isn't healthy, either, and objectively worse.
No, a man WILL ALWAYS blame the other person.
Some do, some don't. Just like women.
