Why would a guy tell me he tried to set me and his friend up but I have a feeling he likes me, but why would he do that?

The night that I met my guy friend and his friend the friend talked to me and seemed interested he told me to hit him up and than my guy friend the same night texted me that he liked me. So his friend talked to me for a few weeks than stopped and it makes no sense because my guy friend told me how he tried to set me and his friend up since his friend was telling him how he wanted to find someone to grow with together and how he can also do his own thing too but it makes no sense
why would my guy friend tell me this now but the night we all saw eachother he said he liked me after his friend told me to hit him up. I feel like my guy friend interfered with me and his own friend developing relationship I feel like he said something to make his friend stop talking to me

I don't know just doesn’t make sense how he would say he liked me the same night and now he’s saying that he secretly set me and his friend up but I don't know tho he said he would let us talk on our own and we did but I don't know why his friend quit on me rn I thought he liked me so confused I have a feeling my guy friend had something to do with it he told him something false and now me and his own friend don’t talk I think he interfered with us
