Why did he shut his phone off?

I liked a guy who said he did not feel the same (in a very kind way) so we agreed on staying friends. He was being sweeter to me now than before I confessed.

We stay in different countries and talk only on text and recently got into a bit of argument. He thought I still liked him and was getting too close, although I was only being friendly (did not flirt AT ALL, talked only like I would with any friend). In the middle of argument he went away for two days, not coming online on any of his socials (I know from his last seen and only single tick on Whatsapp messages for those two days). He never does this and is quite active on whatsapp/telegram.

If he got so affected, does it mean he cares?

Because he went off exactly the moment he read my message and I've never seen him go away from his phone for so long in the 3 years of knowing him.

So in three years you've never met in person?

Met once, I wrote that in the beginning of the question. We went on one date. And had a lot of group zoom meetings because we are in the same social group. He moved to a different country before me met for studies so it's not like we live in the same city and still haven't met.

And he has done like only 2 trips to his home country (which is also where I live) in those 3 years because travel is expensive.
