What did he mean by saying "I'm an asshole and you are the decent one"?

The person I'm meeting told me one day via texting that he is an asshole and I'm the decent one.

The story behind was that he used to joke about things that aren't funny at all and I got offended by that. Then I joked once about such things just to make him feel my pain and the next time he thought I was joking again, in fact I wasn't... I told him "I'm not that cruel to joke about that again" and he said to me those words.

Does he said that to excuse himself?

Well, it's probably true. If he's saying things that you find offensive and don't take kindly to joking about, he's just stating the obvious--that he recognizes that he's the asshole and you're the decent one. If you can handle that and believe opposites attract, then great. Many couples can make things work this way, and some even change some bad habits and ways of speaking by learning from their partner and realizing over time that it's not okay to say such offensive things.

Eh, he probably doesn't mean it. But you did great to demonstrate to him why what he did was being assholish.

But I wouldn't consider him improved until he's spent months following through with little to no slips.

Most people will say something like that and revert back to their old ways once they think you won't notice again.

Trust me when I say that coping with leaving now will be easier than staying longer and completely losing yourself. I was a shell of a woman after allowing myself to stay in situations I shouldn’t when they clearly told me what to expect from them. Rip the bandaid off. You deserve better!
