Why is he avoiding me?

I had this situation with a guy - I liked him, he was flirting a lot with me, we also talked about different topics a lot and he made me feel like it's mutual, he asked me out, we kissed twice and then he told me that he's not looking for anything serious, which made me quite sad, not gonna lie. I told him that I'm fine with not being serious, but he rejected me, so I was hoping that we could be at least friends because I really thought he's a great person.

But the next day he started to completely ignore me and avoid me and now we don't talk at all, we were supposed to go on some trips together because of mutual friends but he didn't go.

I just want some answers, because I don't understand it at all. Okay, I get it, he didn't want me the same way I wanted him, but like, why avoid me?
