Why is he like this?

To give some context, last week during a resting period at school, he kept making eye contact with me and made multiple moves of (I think) trying to get my attention, attempting to talk to me or vice versa.
The next day however, when I finally talk to him, he seemed a lot more distant and uninterested in the awkward conversation.

I know it's not much to go off of, but as of our last interaction together, it seems like he's been playing hot and cold with me. Does anybody know anything about this?

You're coming on too strong. When he makes eye contact with you, just smile so as to look encouraging for HIM to come and talk to you.
