If a guy jokingly compliments himself in text messages is this normal behaviour or does he want validation?

A guy I like we talk on the phone and text will often say something about himself like ‘oh you like that footballer , he’s as talented as me isn’t he?’ or he will send a funny meme and say ‘I’m funny aren’t I?’ Or a photo of himself and say ‘this is my favourite jumper’ etc just wondering if these are red flag behaviours and he’s looking for validation or just wants me to say something nice back

He might low key be looking for validation but probably moreso looking for you to compliment him by drawing comparison from someone famous or a sports star etc. Basically he is fishing for compliments is what I think is going on here. Why? Could be insecurities or just wanting to know you think highly of him. Those are possibilities for that behavior.

If it bothers you now when he does that, that would be enough for me. If something is funny, I'll laugh. But I wouldn't ask people if I am funny. I have a friend (older man) that is never funny when he tries to be. He laughs at himself and sees I am not laughing, so then he'll ask "Was I funny"? I just say no.

Honestly sounds ANNOYING, but certainly does sound like he wants validation. My recommendation: calm his shit down by saying the opposite of his claims. Ex: "I'm funny, huh?"
