He & I (F) sat next to each other on the stairs in a lecture room because all the seats were taken and when suddenly one got free non of us sat there. He didn’t ask anything and neither I because for me it was obvi the priority was he’s because he sat longer on the floor since he was there earlier.

- He was just being polite by not immediately taking the seat since you were already sitting next to each other. Gentlemanly move.

- Maybe he also didn't want to assume the seat was for sure his when you were right there. Didn't want to be rude.

I’d say politeness as a man. It’s like equivalent to opening the door or holding it if you’re coming behind him, he’s giving you dibs so you’re not on the floor.
