Why is it that guys sometimes tend to show interest to a girl but end up not asking for her number?

I would assume that a guy in this situation is not self confident enough to ask her for her number or he´s not that interested enough. But I think the first is more likely. I think the issue is that quite some guys are not confident when it comes to talking to girls since for some guys that´s equally bold as asking her out and they are not brave enough for that move.

It's usually because either the girl isn't showing enough interest in return, OR she makes it clear that she is looking for something different from what he's looking for. Or, in some cases, the guy is just shy.
