It's the simple truth, and something any adult should understand is true.

Your feelings have NO morals and NO long-term values or awareness of consequences.

Let me give you an example: let's say I'm 18 and I got a university scholarship and I get sent a check for $60,000. I could write a check to the university and pay my year's tuition, or I could go and buy a fast car and take a vacation because my feelings tell me the car and vacation would be a lot more fun.

The problem is: my feelings, TODAY at least, aren't going to care one bit that I've ruined my future by foregoing that education that I worked hard to earn the scholarship for. My feelings (today) just care that the car is loud and fast, attracts attention, and the vacation was a blast - those same feelings don't care that I may lose my driver's license via speeding tickets and that I end up working at Walmart because I don't have an education - feelings only care about TODAY - RIGHT NOW.

But happiness is fleeting, and your feelings are constantly changing. That outfit or purse or pair of shoes that you are SO excited to have will probably lose their allure 2 weeks after you buy them, but the money will be gone forever, and they won't comfort you if you are broke a month later and have to miss out on a trip with your girlfriends or whatever because you spent your money already.

It's a basic truth that, as an adult, you have to be aware that you cannot let your feelings steer your life, because they will destroy you. That doesn't mean that your feelings have NO value - rather, it means that your feelings must be recognized for what they are - VERY short-term priority - and you must use your brain - your logic and reasoning - to temper your feelings with more sensible decision-making most of the time. Certainly there are times and situations where you can relax that a bit, but most of the time, you have to take responsibility and accountability for your decisions, which means you can't just listen to your feelings all the time.

This applies to EVERYONE that's a fully-functional adult.

Simple. I would say to him that I'm a US citizen and I'll speak my mind as long as I'm in this country and won't go to one where it's unlawful to do so. Right and wrong don't matter if it's on my mind.

Sounds like he is saying, "Just because a thought enters your head doesn't mean it needs to leave through your mouth." And I agree with that statement as a general proposition.

That you need to probably taking a HARD look at the feelings you get. We all have irrational or overdramatic thoughts from time to time. But it's a person's responsibility to check themselves.
