Hmm, from what you're describing, it sounds like maybe your crush was actually flattered by the compliment, even if he tried to play it cool in front of his friends.
When other people complimented him, he just smiled casually like it was no big deal. But when your friend told him it was you who said it, he "tried not to smile." That tells me he was probably fighting a bigger grin because he likes you too!
Guys can be crap at showing feelings sometimes. But the fact he had to try not to smile vs just smiling casually seems pretty telling. He was likely excited inside that you called him handsome!
If I were you, I'd take that as a good sign he's into you back. Maybe try smiling and waving at him in the halls now and then to test the waters more. Or even try siting by him at lunch. His reaction will let you know if you should ask him out soon! Fingers crossed for you!
