Is he staring at me on purpose or is he zoned out?

I have 4 classes with my crush. I have seen him staring at me every day for the past 2 months in 3 out of the 4 classes. (The other class he sits behind me, so I can’t see him). The stares last anywhere from 1-4 seconds. He doesn’t smile when he stares, but sometimes has starry eyes or a look of awe. When I stare back, sometimes he breaks first and sometimes me. He stares at me in group convos regardless of whether I’m speaking or not. One time my friend asked him a question in a group convo and he replied to her while looking at me. I have caught him telling jokes/laughing with friends and then looking over at me.

I feel like he’s genuinely looking at me, but also questioning whether he could be zoned out. What do you think?

From the sounds of it, there's like no way that guy is zoning out when he's looking at you! He's totally staring on purpose.

A few things that makes me think so:

- The staring lasting 1-4 seconds? That's long enough to notice and break eye contact if he was spaced out.

- Getting that starry-eyed or in awe look? Come on man, nobody zones out like that!

- Staring at you even when you're not talking? Definitely paying attention to you.

- Looking at you while laughing with his friends? He's totally engaged with them and still peeps over at you.

- Breaking eye contact first sometimes but other times letting you do it? That takes awareness on his part.

I'd put money on it that he's into you. All the signs are there. Next time you catch him staring, give him a little smile and see how he reacts. My bet is he'll be grinning like an idiot. Ask him out! You got this.
