Why do men usually need more space and time to process arguments?

I suspect some of it might have to do with introversion. I spoke to a psych major who explained introversion vs. extroversion in depth to me. It's not just about how we energize; it has to do with how we think.

Extroverts tend to process things as they're doing them, so an extrovert tends to process things as they're talking, for example.

Introverts usually process things most when they're not doing things, so an introvert in a conversation tends to need to pause to process what they heard before they respond.

You can apparently even spot who is the extrovert or introvert among complete strangers just by observing how they talk. Introverts will tend to take longer pauses before they respond since they're thinking about how to respond. Extroverts tend to respond a lot more immediately since they're thinking as they're responding (like thinking out loud).

I'm an extreme extrovert if you couldn't guess already. So I tend to literally think out loud but that comes with the disadvantage that I sometimes just go off talking without really stopping myself to deep as long and as deeply as I sometimes should about a topic.

Another factor might be because if we perceive another person as being really sensitive and easier to offend, we might want to pause more to try to say things as tactfully as possible. For example, even though I normally think as I speak as an extreme extrovert, if I'm dealing with someone I think is very sensitive, I will start to pause more before I respond since I feel the need to maximally filter what I'm saying.

So if a man is talking to a woman and he thinks the woman is very sensitive, he might want to spend more time processing how to respond.

Some people just need more space and time to process anything emotionally difficult, whether it's something like a personal argument, getting fired, or losing someone close to you. Women are usually given more guidance and allowed to process difficult things more openly (especially when they're young), so it would make sense that as adults on average women can process arguments faster and more openly than men.

Do they? I believe that is not related to gender, but related to how introver or extraverted the person is. Men just happen to slightly more often be introverts.

Personally, because I don't practice arguing. I have a partner who's really good at it. She runs me through the dirt any time there's a disagreement, regardless of how clearly wrong she's turned out to be no multiple occasions. Many times she's come back and been like "yeah, I guess that wasn't fair." But she's simply better at arguing.

I fix stuff and I like to spend time pondering before speaking. There's a lot to think about.

Um, Im not sure that's true. In my experience, women are far more likely to use the silent treatment, which just accomplishes the same thing, but is obviously just a less mature way of doing it.

Not talking about the silent treatment. You can tell someone you need some space without necessarily cutting all forms of contact.

I don’t feel like I ever need space to process arguments. Sometimes time. I dunno how my time allocation stacks up against that of women.
