It's as bleak as you make it. I'm not going to be a boomer and tell you that you need to just bootstrap your way to success, but there does come a point where you need to accept reality for what it is, get over it, and just make the best of it that you can.

Things like home ownership, the white picket fence family life, being able to enjoy retirement without being hospitalized, etc. are going to evade most of us but moping isn't going to change those outcomes while striving for more despite the odds may possibly allow you to make something good for yourself.
