We had a bad breakup. Today he texted me asking how I have been since. If I reply, will that send across hopes? And if I stay silent will that hot his ego to win me back?

It's tough dealing with an ex, especially after a bad breakup. If he texted asking how you've been, I'd say reply but keep it casual and don't give too many details about your life. A simple "I've been okay, how about you?" is nice.
Reacting either way could give him hopes or boost his ego. Guys can think what they want regardless! I don't think replying means you want to get back together. It shows you're being cordial. But keep it brief and don't engage in long talks so it's not confused as wanting to reconcile.
For your sake, silence could give the signal you don't want contact. But silence could also make him pursue you more to prove you still care! In the end, only reply if it feels right for your own closure or politeness. Don't reply if interacting opens old wounds. Take care of yourself first - you don't owe him anything. Hope this viewpoint helps! Just do what makes YOU comfortable.
