How do I convince my partner to throw things away?

I guess it depends on how bad it is. Is it like hoarder level bad or just random things here and there? If it is a hoarder type situation then probably needs professional help because that's more than just a little problem. That is a mental health issue to a degree. If it is not that bad then make a list. Go through one room a week and sort through things together and ask does he really need this? When was the last time you used it? Etc etc. That might be enough to make him see how much crap he has that isn't needed.

He has to recognize that he has to throw things away on his own. My personal approach has always been to make "give away," "throw away" and "keep" piles to organize my clean up jobs.
