Why did he reject my offer to buy him coffee?

I have a guy friend from college and we both graduated, started working, and reconnected recently. We met up somewhere to catch up a few months ago and he bought us our coffee. We recently met again a few weeks ago and i offered to buy us coffee and i didn’t try to come off as flirty but me and my friends usually take turns treating each other. My guy friend had a very serious face and said “no, it’s okay.” Did he think i was trying to flirt or something?

Most likely he did and did not want to give your attempt a chance. It is a clear message that he just wants your friendship to remain as it is and not to move a step further.

When you try to go a step further into a friendship relation, most of the time this relationship is ruined.

I don't know what your true intentions were and he was in the same situation. He did not want to take a chance and thus, he refused your offer, which makes sense.

Another reason could be that he is in a relationship and that he did not want to potentially jeopardize it in case you were trying to hit on him.

Should you ever meet again, it is best that each buys his own drinks. That avoids all kinds for conflicts.

I'm the kind of guy that would probably have done the same. I can say that most guys aren't really thinking about "Is she flirting with me" because generally, our first thought is "She's not flirting with me".
He bought you coffee and doesn't think you should owe him a coffee in return, is possible. It's also possible that he's got something on his mind, he's busy, he's just not looking for a coffee at that time.

With so many factors floating about. It's 'possible' that he turned down what he thought was an advance but just as likely that he turned down coffee and didn't expect you to take it unkindly.

I tend to turn down offers and never once thought it was an advance. Perhaps some of us guys are a bit bone headed but girls assume that we assume the worst... or the best... in a lot of situations. Sometimes we're really just not all that deep.

It's happened to me. I can't speak for your friend but for me if I let a chick pays for the first date I'm afraid she'll think I'm a deadbeat. I always turned down the offer when a girl asked to pay on the first date. Afterwards, once you're in a relationship it's different. By then she knows you're not a broke freeloader looking for a chick to support you.
