Lack of interest?

So I spent about 45 minutes walking with this guy I like yesterday. I figured he’d pass me and head back, but he stopped and walked and talked with me. He told me stories and then at one point mentioned how he used to enjoy when people would pick on his ex wife (when they were married). And made the comment, “And I guess that’s why I’m single.” Anyway, later that night, I texted him to thank him for the company and say I had fun. The response back was, “well you got me out of doing work, so I guess we both win.” Obviously not quite what I was hoping for and took it to mean no romantic interest. Thoughts?

There isn't enough context to tell if he is absolutely interested in you romantically yet. Him choosing to walk with you and initiate conversation, is a good sign that he enjoys talking with you, and spending time with you on a 45min walk displays he is comfortable around you enough to do so.
As for his response, it doesn't indicate anything romantic, but it does suggest a friendship. Maybe that is what he is after right now?
Maybe he isn't looking to date or get serious with anyone, but instead is interested in you enough to get to know you more and maybe see where things go in the future. This scenario doesn't provide enough support of HIM or HIS actions confirming he is looking for a relationship or not.

Despite this guy, if he isn't ready to date, please do not be that person to wait around for him. Please do not let the hope of dating him or your interest in him cloud the reality. Seems like he is just getting to know you and wanted some company on the walk, and needed to vent a bit, or dip into YOU and try to figure out what YOU are looking for - which is why he mentioned so casually about being single.

If you spend time with him again, see if he mentions his relationship status, if he asks you about your dating life / relationship interests, or anything further that can indicate what he is in fact seeking from you / with you.

I’ve known him about three years now. We’ve definitely gotten closer, but I can’t tell if it’s a friendship only relationship or growing into more. He’s tough to read. I know he flirts sometimes, but he’s never tried to make plans to meet up or anything. And I’m either really bad at dropping hints or he doesn’t want to pick up on them.
