Why is the most common reason the average guy believes he is attractive?

I think most average looking people think they are more attractive than they actually are. If you think about it, most of society is average looking and date other average looking people. So, most average looking people have the most dating options. Also, average looking people tend to get the most compliments and are able to get away with bragging about themselves, especially compared to attractive people and unattractive people who are shunned for doing so. The only time they get a wake up call is when they approach an actual attractive person and get shot down or they move to a big city.
