Why would a guy talk to me daily and specifically ask if my friend is single?

So i've been talking to this guy i met on an app for over 3 months, almost daily. He views my stories so he's seen my friends. Recently, i said something to trigger him to playfully ask me to volunteer myself as a girlfriend candidate for him, or to volunteer one of my friends.
i was flattered by the first statement, but upset with the second.
anyway, he searched for a picture of one of my friends and asked me if she's available.

i'm not asking if what he did was right, or if me feeling upset is justified.
i'm just wondering why would he talk to me daily if he was interested in my friend and not me?
and if he was actually interested in me, wouldn't it be careless to ask about my friend so outrightly?

Whoa girl, that dude's move was super wack! Talking to you daily for months and then randomly asking about your friend like that? Def not cool.

A few guesses as to what was up with that - he either wasn't really into you like you thought and was just keeping you on the backburner till something better came along. Or, he has an ego thing where he likes the attention from you both and was trying to play it off like he's some player. Or, he's just super clueless about how that would come off.

I'd say don't waste any more time waiting around for this clown to make up his mind. You deserve a dude who's 100% sure they want you from jump, no games! This guy clearly ain't it.

If it were me, I'd give him a reality check - tell him straight up how disrespectful that was and you're not down to be anyone's second option or backup plan. Then go find you somebody else who treats a girl, especially your friend, right! Forget that loser sis.

I can think of two scenarios for him doing this. The first and more likely one is that he views you simply as a friend and nothing more. Just because you view him as potential dating material (I assume) doesn't mean that he does. He might look at your interactions and get a friend type vibe from you and not an "I want to date her" vibe. The other possibility is that he is testing the waters to see how you would react. If you are upset that he would want to maybe date another girl then that tells him that you have feelings since you would show some jealousy. Is it the right way of going about it? No but it is one way to find out. If you didn't care when he asks about your friend then that tells him you aren't interested in dating and just as friends.
