Why would a guy ask you if you're single or not?

I have been told that I guy who isn't gay will only ask a girl if she has a boyfriend if he is single. So my questions are:

Why would a guy ask a girl this?

Is there some kind of motive behind it or is he just curious?

Guys what is your reasoning behind saying something like this to girls?

it just depends on the situation I think. sometimes it would be asked for something along the lines of bringing up conversation. something to talk about briefly. and other times, its something guys will ask that question to hint that they may be interested without having to ask you out and feel embarrassed if they get rejected

So in the situation of: 6 people going out for drinks and sitting at a table. three that are in relationships are on one side the single people on the other side. the other girl is complaining about how she wants to go on a date and then the single guy asks if I have anyone special. I tell him no and ask him and he says no. is this just a conversational thing then?

I think it sounds more conversational. but the fact that the guy asked you out of nowhere randomly says something. he might have some interest at least

Um...don't believe that 'he is single' because he says so.

He could be a player, and you'd lose.

Or --- on the bright side --- he could be single and respect your boundaries if you are in a relationship.

From my experience, every guy who has ever asked me this question has been attracted to me... So I believe that there should be a motive behind it...

We married guys will ask this because it's much 'safer' to flirt with another married person on many levels. They're much less likely to get hysterical and accuse you of harassment and the like. They're more likey to flirt back playfully.

i usually ask just cause I'm curious. besides if I end up liking the girl its good to know if she's single or not.
