Why would a guy ask you if you‘re single?

The question is: is there a chance he‘s just asking to make smalltalk? Because that was actually the only thing he asked me about my life/myself today and today was the first time in months we talked one on one even though very shortly

specifically he said „does the boyfriend from last year still exist?“ (no) and „are you seeing anyone right now?“ (also no) and then proceeded to try to laugh it off with „what, i gotta stay updated you know“
