Subtle way to ask a guy if he's single?

There's a guy at the gym I like. He's friendly towards me, but I'm not sure if he's interested or just being polite. We both work out there a lot, so I don't want things to get awkward if he is already taken.

How can I ask if he's single in a non-awkward way?

(1) Check that he's not wearing rings... (2) Work in a sentence about something that's nice to do...with a wife/girlfriend. He may take the hint and mention his girlfriend/wife at that point -- unless he's either SINGLE or just being slick, lol. Chat him up until you've figured out which one he is. :-)

This answer is almost perfect, though don't say 'this would be good to do with a girlfriend/wife' instead reply to something he says that is a bit weak or girlie with 'wow your girlfriend has made you watch too many chick flicks (or watch The Notebook too many times)' or similar, this can be manipulated and applied for anything he says as a reply.

Also it looks less like your hitting on him an opens it up for him to make the move

Gee whizz, as a guy, it's easier to make a more direct reference to a gal about having a bf/hubbie. Girls -- nice girls -- really would never do that, lol. Being too direct with a guy is viewed as more overt flirtatiousness... ;-)
