Tbh if he’s shy and he has a crush on you he will probably try to act non-chalant or as if he doesn’t have a crush until he is able to figure out it the feeling is mutual. It can be hard to distinguish lack of interest from “self - preservation”

I assume your asking because you are interested in said “shy guy”

I recommend you try to be flirty and give him some hints. (They will probably have to be more obvious than you’d think but be careful not to come on too strong.) You should really only have to do this once or twice.

If you notice him start to open up a little more then he probably is interested.

In my opinion she should make an attempt to start a conversation about anything. You will never know for sure how they fee without actually talking to them.
You mentioned trying to get a read on the situation based on walking past him if he’s sitting nearby. You will probably never get a good idea of how he feels just by walking by/brushing into him.

If the opportunity presents itself she should sit next to him and say something (literally anything) to at least make it known that she’s at the very least, open to conversation.

Contrary to what seems to be popular opinion these days, there’s nothing wrong with a woman “dropping the handkerchief.”

Depending on the context of the relationship, many guys may be worried about coming off as creepy or worried that making an advance that could be deemed as inappropriate. (Especially in a professional setting.)

There was a shy guy who liked me — apparently it was really obvious but I didn’t pick up on it, perhaps bc I was young. Anyway, he’s find excuses to sit next to me and make little comments (heckling) and ultimately, last day or so of classes he abruptly stole a kiss, which caught me so off guard I hopped right off the bus and walked to my destination (5 miles) rather than taking the bus with him.

Are you certain they're shy? Some guys aren't shy they're just guarded. Lots of women out there looking to EXPLOIT men and any percieved weakness.

To deal the problem you have to know what the problem is. And it isn't always shyness.
