Am I wrong for not checking his trash or is he wrong?

Question

I clean offices Monday through Friday at a commercial building. There are two guys who rarely have trash in their offices the rest of them has trash everyday. So 2 weeks ago i asked the guys since they rarely have trash could i start taking their trash out in Sundays instead of everyday since they barely have trash. They both agreed that they were okay with me taking their trash on Fridays because they don’t have much trash through out the week.

One of the guys asked me yesterday “why don’t you check my trash throughout the week” and i told him “i asked you a few weeks ago to start taking your trash out on Fridays and you said you were fine with that” and he said “i said yeah to Fridays but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check my trash throughout the week you could at least check while you are up here “

On the rare occasion that they might have trash, I’d make a point (without consulting or involving the trash makers) to check all the trashes, every day you’re working. It doesn’t take much effort to cover your ass. Be grateful to the ones who usually don’t have trash, but it’s the least you can do, minimal effort, & looks bad if it piles up, regardless of the arrangement you made.

When they have little or no trash, is okay if you take their trash on Fridays, but you should check everyday like you do everyone else, because their are times they may have trash during the week that you need to take.

Why would you even ask that? It's such a simple thing to just walk through and see if the can is empty or not. If it's just paper/plastic you don't even change the liner.

I'm failing to see your grievance here. You weren't doing your job. Even if they said you could skip it all together, here's a simple question. Are they cutting your paycheck?

Y'all agreed that you would check his trash on Sunday, so I'm not entirely clear what the benefit of checking his trash throughout the week is. If he wanted you to check his trash every day, he should have said that.

I'm leaning in favor of your side of the argument for the simple fact that this was your agreement.

You can at least check the trash. I'm pretty sure they agreed to the logic that you shouldn't have to take it out every day if it doesn't need to be, but I think you took that as not even checking if it needs to be taken out.

He already told you that though... basically.

So yes, you were in the wrong.

Thinking about myself, I rarely have enough trash to justify taking it out everyday. But every once in a while, I might bring lunch back to my office or toss something like a banana peel I’m too lazy to take the cafeteria for compost. Our cleaners check everyday.

You are wrong. Taking trash out is part of your job. It is fine if there is none/little. But checking is reasonable.

Neither one of you is wrong. It was simply a misunderstanding. Just start checking his trash every day. (But you don't have to take it out every day if there's not enough to take out.)
