As I recall, Mr Borgnine's character got married in "Marty". I agree, there were no incels in the 50s. I submit however, that it was because there was no internet. Loneliness could not be forestall by online interaction, and you couldn't find other luck less, socially inept guys to commiserate with and convince yourself that all women are engaged in a conspiracy against you. So when the pain of loneliness overcame the fear of rejection, you went out and tried.
