He Keeps the Conversation Going, But Never Initiates—What Does It Mean?

I’ve been texting this person for a little while, and while we seem to click pretty well, I’m not sure if he’s just being friendly or if there’s more interest on his side. We always have good conversations, but he never really initiates texting first—he just keeps the conversation going once I start it.

For example, last night we were chatting, and in the middle of a topic, he suddenly he would talk to me later (had a good reason). He also was active on Insta today but didn’t initiate.

Some other things I’ve noticed: He replies pretty quickly when he’s free, usually within a minute or so, and we’ll go back and forth for a while. When he’s busy, it takes him longer, but he always lets me know why. For instance, he’ll mention he was fixing something or dealing with other tasks. He always gives thoughtful, detailed responses and seems to try to keep the conversation going. He asks questions and adds his thoughts to whatever I share, even if it’s something small. He never just says something like "lol" or "okay." He also hearts my text every once in a while. He’s also complimented me a few times, but not in a super flirty way—more like casual remarks about things I’ve mentioned, like saying that I’m smart or would be good on AGT. We’ve also had some fun banter, like finishing lyrics to songs together, and he’ll continue talking even if I give short responses. However, sometimes I’ve noticed he’ll be on Instagram and take a little longer to reply (like 5–10 minutes) even though he just picked up his phone. He’s generally engaged when we talk, but I can’t tell if he’s just being polite or if he’s actually interested. I also asked a friend who knows him well about it, and he said my crush probably wouldn’t be interested in someone like me, though he didn’t explain why. That kind of threw me off.

Based on this, is he just being nice or could he be interested in something more? Note: we've only been texting for a little while, we just met (I got his number this week).

It can be super hard to tell sometimes since everyone is so different. There are people who look like they are in love with you who are really being friendly while others love you but you would never suspect it even if they think they are being obvious.

I will say this directly ask him how he feels and if you’re interested tell him. Don’t wait too long I would say the signs are he does like you to some extent or the other. But waiting too long there is probably other people that like him too. Attraction can come and go by the way. You don’t want to wonder what could have been.

Number two, if you’re rejected number one you have closure and two you’re not wasting your time on someone whose never going to ask you out or make a move anyways.

Asker I understand that nobody should rush the other. But expressing romantic interest is important early on. It’s important to know where one another stands with one another.

Last thing you want is for one person to be friend zoned while the other is interested in more. Don’t rush respect what he has to say. But tell him you’re interested and ask if he is too. To at least get the ball rolling
