Well it's called confirmation bias. We all forget the things that don't match up, give wide error bars to things we want to be true. We generally remember the remarkable things that happen. Humans are extremely poor overall at evaluation statistical probability, so many things seem unlikely when in fact they are very likely. That's why people buy Powerball tickets. plus research clearly shows that we actually create memories to fit narratives. We are pattern seeking beings but by nature have to be dismissive of tons of data in our environment or we would be overloaded. We forget the 14 times we answered the phone and thought it was someone and was wrong but vividly remember the time we knew it was grandma calling and we were right. It's why psychic shows are so compelling and seances seem just to dead on right. Forgive the pun.
