Generally speaking, men don't want to be taken for granted. That's why it grates on them when they hear a woman voice that expectation.

But men also generally like to be generous and to be appreciated, that's why they may insist on paying the bill for a woman. :)

I think it can matter how it's framed.
If a woman say it in a very entitled and spoiled way, that usually doesn't give a good impression.

The man who pays probably still wants to feel appreciated and respected.

I kind of feel like it's best to split. If you aren't together, then both should at least pay for their own meal until they become a couple & serious. Then it doesn't matter who pays after that.

I generally prefer to pay, just because I was raised to believe that's what a gentleman does.

However, if she insists on paying, or splitting, the bill, then I'll generally acceot, graciously. I'm sure she has her reasons for doing so, and I'll respect that. I also don't want her to think that I expect anything in return for paying.

If you both prefer a trad relationship, man pays.

If you both are liberals and feminists then splitting it is. Each to their own...

Because women shit test men by offering to pay half on a first date, and then judging him for it if he allows her to. It's happened to me three times, and to many guys I know.
