He and I aren't super close friends, so why would he buy me flowers for my birthday?

I know him from school, and he's the only guy in our class (our career path is very female-dominated). Even though he is my friend, he almost seems to "prefer" talking to other people over me. Part of me understands, because I have severe social anxiety, and I get nervous when people talk to me. I wish I weren't, but it's something I've always struggled with. That being said, I always have to initiate the conversation first. Even for something such as asking about a homework assignment, if it's us two, and another person, he'll always ask the other person.

He clearly doesn't dislike me, though. When I send a chat to the entire class inviting them to my party, he was one of the very first (and one of the only!) people to come to my party. Not only did he come, but he arrived with a huge bouquet of pink roses.
