Either one of four things comes to mind. 1. He's planning something for you. 2. There was something embarrassing about what he was doing. 3. He might be cheating on you. 4. He could be doing something to help a friend or family member that requires discretion but unlikely.

Lying about where you are to your SO is weird behavior and rings some alarm bells to me. I'd recommend you either confront him about it and ask for an explanation or try to find out if he's cheating somehow without going too far and violating his privacy beyond an acceptable boundary. He could be cheating but it's not 100% so be careful with how you approach this and put a lot of thought into it.
