Why would a guy act hot and cold but when he sees you talking to another guy act really nice and back on again?

A guy seemed to l really like me, then he backed off for a bit and became slightly cold.
i was talking to another male friend the other day and this guy saw this and as soon as I finished talking, the guy was really nice and attentive again trying to get my attention. He was sitting close, leaning in, which he hasn’t done before. I really don’t get the mood swings. Does it even like me or not really? I thought we had good chemistry both physically and mentally.

I can understand thinking you had good mental chemistry but how would you have good physical chemistry? As for the question I wouldn't take it to mean anything that he is "hot and cold". It very well may be mood issues but don't read into that much. I think the more likely thing is that he was hoping for some sort of different reaction from you in the beginning and didn't get it. We all interpret things differently. Even if you thought you were giving clear signals he may not see them the same way you do. Whatever the case is I would not put too much effort into someone that acts differently one day to the next. Personally I like consistency with someone... not having to guess which version of them is going to show up.

I mean non verbal signs like checking me in, leaning in super close, intense eye contact etc.
