Why does my guy friend behaves this way?

so i have this guy friend who i ended up liking (this is about 2-3 years back) we hit off pretty good especially with our conversations basically i ended up like him because of his personality. The thing that confuses me is that he has a girlfriend but he always compares himself to the guys i potentially am on talking terms with. Saying stuff like,”he won’t be better than me” “he’s not better looking than me” “oh you want me to download a dating app, i’ll only find you as a match since we live close by” stuff like these all while he still has a girlfriend. It was so difficult for my feelings, now fast forward like 2 years, stuff like this has stopped happening so i could peacefully move on until this one recent encounter, we were both drunk and i swear there was this one moment that we were so close to each other that i could literally smell his breath plus the occasional touching here and there (the innocent kind)
Everything was fine until this recent encounter, he’s my best friend (although he angrily told me not to call him that) but with these mixed signals and him being serious about his girlfriend i don’t know what to think of this.
and i don’t even know what’s worse, being an option like this or not being acknowledged as a friend?

What in the world have I just read? How is he your friend might I ask? "basically i ended up like him because of his personality.". So the guy has a shit personality yet you are friends with him. Then you say you let him go years ago but still engage him as a friend. Then you say you could peacefully move on but it certainly doesn't sound like you took that option or you wouldn't be posting about it online today as you just have. Oh and you are both drunks from your own admission. I think you two need to stay far away from each other as possible. He has a girlfriend and you seem obsessed with this guy. Before you say otherwise ask yourself why you signed up to a website to post about him.

i value your insight and see why you said this. Honestly i posted this with past details to give out the context for this recent situation i needed an opinion on. I have long known that he gives me mixed signals or maybe it’s just fun for him to do that. The time when i fell for him was when these traits were not out in open. I’ve talked about this situation several times with my friends (back when it started happening) and they just confused me more with,”oh he def likes you” and what not
and yeah you’re right maybe i’ve not been able to let go of him yet but i won’t deny that he’s been a bit better than the friends i’ve had my entire life hence my unwillingness to just cut him out
ps: i wrote the entire situation as shortly as i could, the details are different, yes he does not have a good personality but it’s not as shitty as you put it out to be

yes i see and deep down even i know that too, just that he’s actually been a good friend (or maybe my other friends are worse lol)
So i do keep the interactions limited but there are times i end up needing him

hmm now this is something that’s actually helpful for me to self reflect. What i once wanted from him was the words,”oh it’s been you all long” but then i silently clung onto the hope of being just friends (he was the one who called me his best friend first)
Your question made me realise right now i want neither because whenever i try to move on he does what he does and ends up messing me.
the only thing that troubles is my still existing soft spot for him
