Why do this guy keep focusing on my income?

I started talking to an old friend on social media. He wanted to come visit me after he learned that I moved to another state. He also started asking me about my career I told him I am a teacher and live alone and he told me he works at Amazon and still lives with his parents. As we were planning the trip for him to visit me he started claiming that I was rich and naming all the places he wanted to go. Of course he wanted to stay at my place to avoid hotel cost. I told him all these things he named is quite expensive but he was like “it’s okay your rich you can afford it.” He also started asking me why I don’t drive an expensive car and I was like because I am not rich.

I told him that I am not rich and why he was so fixated on my income? Then he blew up on me and started calling me crazy and stupid. I was confused by that and told him not to come visit me.

Why was this guy so fixated on my income?
