Why a guy is showing off in front of me? Does he think I only care about money?

One of the friends in our group, got a new good paying job and we caught up recently after he came to visit us. As soon as we arrived to the restaurant, and while waiting for another friend to join us, he started talking about his work and general stuff that are happening in our lives.

Suddenly he pulled a card from his wallet and he was showing me his new American Express card, as well as his new phone. Then we kept talking about our dating lives, given he was seeing a new person and I’m not.

Then he proceeded to tell me that I should date someone who has an American Express card and he was laughing whilst saying it. He also showed me his pay check, which I was very surprised and told him that I believe him without the need to show his pay check.

The whole discussion about his work and how much he is making, was so unusual and felt a bit uncomfortable because it was only directed to me and gave me the impression, that he think that I care only about people if they have a high income. That’s not true and many times I told him that money is not everything, but he still doesn’t believe me.

Am I giving the vibe that I only care about money or what’s up with this guy?
