Why did this random interaction happen at the mall?

I like to just walk around the mall sometimes,

Today I was walking alone and there was a group of 3 or 4 teenagers walking in front of me.

Completely out of nowhere one of them looked back at me and he this interaction happened.

Him
“Can I say something?

Me
“Yeah what’s up”

Him.
“I just wanted to say I hope you have a good day”

Me.
“Thanks I appreciate it.”

(I should have said “thanks I appreciate it, I hope you and your friends do as well” but I didn’t think of that at the time)

Then he turned around and one of his friends asked what he said to me and he told them.

Then I decided to turn around and leave the mall which I was planning to leave soon anyway.

This was very wholesome but random.
He didn’t seem to be messing with what.

What do you think this was about?

I think that they had some bad intentions and then changed their mind. Or they were checking you out to steal your wallet? Can't blindly trust anyone anymore.

That actually can’t be because I was an hour away from home.

I go to the nearest big city to make more money with deliveries and sometimes I take a break and walk around the mall.

No.

I know from the French perspective Americans are more sociable and friendly, but usually it’s not like this.
