some random dude on the train asked me a question and he replied "thanks. sorry to bother you, love". It caught me off guard. Its common for women to call me "love" but not men, for a reason

It might be how he was raised. I encountered a women working at the McDonald's drive through that called me love. She's like "Is that all for you darling?, Have a nice day love." It felt good, but I bet she literally says that to everybody.

It's certainly not the unusual... I very often get called "love" by men... Naturally I take absolutely no notice and never respond.
