Weird mixed signals from a guy who addresses himself as aloof?

So basically there's this guy I'm friends with, not interested in him in any way shape or form that is romantical, but sometimes understanding him as a friend is weird? AS in, he claims to be aloof, ignores me on multiple occasions, but will suddenly have bursts of care like he wants me to go bed, asks me if I'm going to be ok when I wake up in the middle of the night and can't sleep?

Like I'll be up playing a game, he'll see me and ask if I'm ok-

Will say things like "I would totally believe you think this creature is real"(and the creature is some weird cute thing)

"I can totally see you saying/wearing this" and or "It's totally a picture you would take"

Everything is kind of like weirdly close but he acts extremely distant?

won't ever ask me to hang out, play games or whatever but then will give this vibe of wanting to take care of you? it's such a curious dynamic I don't know what to think of it-

does he care? Is it just that he doesn't know what to say or what to do? Do guys force themselves to say those things I mentioned? The mixed signals are real and I don't know if I should invest in the friendship and build upon it or just keep it as a fun little dynamic so I don't get too attached

It appears that this guy lives in a world of his own where imaginary things dictate the way he behaves.

He may be interested in you but either he is too shy to make the first step or he wants you to initiate that first step.

I wonder if he does not suffer from a bipolar disorder where he is like a Dr. Jerkyll and Mr. Hyde. Two different personalities that are within his mind and that want two different things. The one wants to draw your attention and the other one seems to want to distance himself from you.
