How can a man comfort a woman who gets scared during horror movies?

The reason why I'm asking this question is because I wanted to know how would men calm down the women that they care about and if they get scared of scary movies like for example if men and women watched a scary movie by Stephen King the it movie and the men sees the women that they care about getting really scared and that the men brings the women that they care about close to them and tell the women that they care about that every thing will be OK and that the men will keep them safe and please appropriate opinions and please no inappropriate opinions

My girlfriend both loves and is terrified of scary movies. Most of them I find to be boring and predictable, but occasionally there is one with decent writing that can keep my attention.

Anyway, the standard thing has always been that the girl wants to hold the guy (both hands around the guy's bicep is typical, or her holding his hand/arm tightly) or cuddle against him and be soothed and be gently (non-sexually) stroked when scared to calm her down. My girlfriend will sometimes crawl up into my lap and hide her eyes in my shoulder, and peek out with one eye between the scary scenes.

None of that ever made much sense to me - why insist on watching movies that make you uncomfortable? - but lots of reading has taught me that women who don't live with real, present danger grow to crave danger to kind of reset and recalibrate their feelings - kind of like racing your engine during the tuning process to make sure everything is running right. Plus, it almost always leads to getting laid, so I've learned to just go with it. LOL.
